MB Stoneman – Artist Biography
MB Stoneman is an artist, curator, community arts facilitator, writer, independent publisher and art tutor, living in Pātea, Taranaki, Aotearoa New Zealand.
Stoneman is an established printmaker working across traditional and contemporary disciplines. Her work explores the relationship between people and place. Through an intuitive and process-led approach, Stoneman uses printmaking as a means of investigating themes of transformation, identity, memory and belonging. Texture, layering and the physicality of mark-making play an important role in her practice, reflecting an ongoing interest in the connections between the human condition and the natural world.
Stoneman exhibits her work widely in public and private galleries and museums. She ran a private art gallery in Pātea (The Bank Room) from 2018 – 2022, representing artists from around Aotearoa. In 2024, Stoneman established Stoneman Press, a small independent press with a focus on hand-made books combining writing and art.
Alongside her studio practice, Stoneman tutors printmaking workshops, sharing their passion for the medium with artists of all experience levels, as well as primary and secondary schools. She has worked as Arts Co-ordinator for her local district council for 19 years.
